Tucked into the sun-warmed town of Alcácer do Sal in Portugal's Alentejo region, Casa dos Avós carries the kind of unhurried charm that this part of the country does so well. Alcácer do Sal itself is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns on the Iberian Peninsula, rising gently from the banks of the River Sado, and the surrounding landscape of rice paddies, cork oak forests, and wetland nature reserves gives the area a quietly dramatic character that feels a world apart from the busier Algarve coast to the south. The property offers guests a two-bedroom townhouse arrangement that works beautifully as a proper home base rather than a passing stopover. The accommodation includes a living area, a kitchen fitted out for real cooking, and two bathrooms, making it a genuinely comfortable setup for an extended stay. Casa dos Avós also provides access to a swimming pool, a welcome luxury during the long Alentejo summers, and a restaurant on site means guests have a reliable dining option without needing to venture out every evening. Free WiFi and private parking are both included, which keeps logistics straightforward for those exploring the region by car. This is a property that suits couples looking for a relaxed retreat, small families who want the flexibility of a self-contained space, or friends travelling together who appreciate having room to spread out. The slower pace here rewards guests who want to explore local bird watching routes, the Sado estuary, or the historic town centre on foot. Lisbon is roughly an hour and a half away by car, making Casa dos Avós a realistic choice for anyone wanting a quieter alternative to the capital while remaining within reasonable reach of it.

The kitchen is very good and the mattresses are nice.

There's a shortage of fans because it's very hot, and only a very small one is sufficient for the bedrooms. There's also a shortage of an ironing board. There's a shortage of a stick vacuum cleaner for the house.

The tranquility. The view of the estuary from the balcony. The region up to Comporta is magnificent, truly teeming with birds.
Disliked
Alcacer is a somewhat dead city, apart from the docks.

The beds are awful. The double bed has a spring frame that digs into your body no matter how you position yourself. The single bed is short and has a wooden slat at the foot that forces you to sleep curled up. The pillows are rock hard and smell musty. If you improve these things, the rest is fine, but sleeping badly is horrible.
